Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) Rapid Review Synthesis

Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) is an emergency department (ED)-based model of care that includes specialized clinicians, processes, and/or environmental modifications to enhance care for older adults with complex health needs. In October 2025, the Supporting Transformation through Research, Evidence, and Action in Mental Health (STREAM) Lab at the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care conducted a rapid review synthesis to identify what is known about outcomes and implementation of GEM programs. The review identified 13 studies and evidence that GEM reduced hospital admissions and costs.
